The IDIAP Research Institute (www.idiap.ch), a laboratory associated
with EPFL (Swiss Federal Insitute of Technology, Lausanne) seeks
qualified candidates for
- a doctoral position
- a postdoctoral position
in the field of computer vision and machine learning on
Event Recognition in large Multimedia Collections
Context :
---------
The research will be conducted in the context of the CARETAKER
project, a new multi-site project funded by the European Community (8
partners in 7 countries). The project aims at extracting structured
knowledge (events defined through ontologies) from multimedia
collections recorded over a network of cameras and microphones (in
real public transportation sites). In this project, IDIAP will
investigate and develop principled methods based on generative and
margin-based modeling to address various issues in multi-person
tracking, event recognition, and visual data mining (data fusion,
uncertainty handling, lack or small amount of labeled training data,
multi-person complex events, unusual event detection, etc). The
conducted research will also involve a thorough evaluation of the
methods on caretaker data.
Requirements for PhD student:
----------------------------
The successful Ph.D student, who will be enrolled in the EPFL doctoral
program, should have a good background in statistics, applied
mathematics and computer science. Background or experience in
statistical learning theory, image processing or computer vision would
be a plus. The applicant should be familiar with C/C++ programming
under a Unix/Linux environment.
Appointment for the PhD student position is for a maximum of 4 years,

dissertation. Starting date is 1st semester of 2006.
Requirement for post-doctoral researcher:

computer vision. Experience in one or several of the following areas
is required:
- computer vision and tracking
- multiple camera analysis
- statistical learning
