Academic Fellowship in the area of Modelling, Imaging and Design
School of Computing, University of Leeds, UK
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A prestigious appointment is available in an internationally-leading research
group within the School of Computing. Applications are invited from individuals
with post-doctoral (or equivalent) experience who have established their
potential for excellence in scholarship and research. The Fellowship is five
years in length and, subject to satisfactory completion of probation,
guarantees an established academic post. In the early stages there will be a
strong emphasis on research.

Based in the School of Computing, topics include Computational Modelling and
Simulation; Vision and Imaging; and, System Architecture Design for Internet
Computing.

Enquiries specific to the research area may be made to Professor Peter Jimack
(0113) 343 5464, email p.k.jimack at leeds.ac.uk

Further information on the Academic Fellowship Scheme is available at
http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/acfellow/. The rules for the scheme indicate that people
already in permanent employment will not normally be eligible for appointment.

Fellows will normally be appointed to Research Staff Grade IA or II (£19,460 -
£29,128) or (£27,116- £35,883) depending on experience. (More senior
appointments than this may, however be considered for particularly outstanding
appointments.)

The University is introducing a new reward framework which will facilitate the
recruitment, retention and motivation of world class staff.

Informal enquiries may be made to Margaret Smith (0113) 343 2001 email

Vision and Imaging
------------------
The Computer Vision Group is part of our Artificial Intelligence activity,
focusing on general methods for object recognition, segmentation and video
analysis; and on applications of computer vision to medical imaging, biological
research, surveillance, sport and entertainment. The group has been in
existence for over 15 years and is now one of the largest centres for computer
vision research in the UK, with five permanent members of academic staff:
Profs. David Hogg and Roger Boyle, and Drs. Andy Bulpitt, Derek Magee and Kia
Ng.

Our research on video analysis has focussed largely, but not exclusively, on
human behaviour. We are interested in all aspects of this problem, including
fundamental research on categorisation, tracking, segmentation and stochastic
modelling, through to applied work addressing social and commercial priorities.
Some of our recent work, in collaboration with the School's Knowledge
Representation and Reasoning group, is exploring the integration of vision
within a broader cognitive framework, including audition, inductive reasoning,
and intentionality. We won the Machine Intelligence Prize of the British
Computer Society in 2004 for this research.
