The Machine Vision Group, University of Oulu, Finland, is renowned 
worldwide for its expertise in computer vision. We collaborate with 
other groups of similar status in Europe, USA and China.

The group is now searching for prominent candidates to work as

POSTDOC AND RESEARCH ASSISTANT

in our challenging and inspiring research projects. The topics of 
interest include:

- Computer vision for affective human-robot interaction

- Face and gesture analysis

- Human detection for an autonomously guided vehicle (AGV)

- Automatic categorization of images and videos

Developing intelligent machines and robots is one of the ultimate goals 
of computer science and artificial intelligence research. Within 15 
years domestic servicing robots can replace the human in many routine 
tasks in our everyday lives. New leading-edge approaches for affective 
human-robot interaction in smart ubiquitous computing environments are 
planned to be developed in our project. The Machine Vision Group has 
reached very promising results in face recognition, recognition of 
facial expressions and visual speech recognition by using Local Binary 
Patterns. Also, novel methods for recognizing actions and gestures have 
been developed.

Human detection is a prerequisite for mobile robots and automatically 
guided vehicles when operating concurrently with humans in the same 
environment. The objective in our project is to investigate techniques 
for robust human detection under varying conditions and poses using 
monocular as well as stereoscopic image information. Automatic 
categorization of images and videos aims to development of efficient 
computer vision techniques for content-based information retrieval from 
the Internet.

The work is carried out in a team consisting of postgraduate students 
and senior researchers.

An ideal candidate should have a PhD / M.Sc. in computer science or 
electrical engineering with previous experience on computer vision. 
Programming skills with C/C++/Matlab is desired. Also, good knowledge of 
spoken and written English is required.

Duration of the contract:

Post doc: 1-2 years

Research Assistant: at first, one year. There is a good possibility to 
apply for a PhD studentship for 4-year term from the Infotech Oulu 
Graduate School. As a Finnish University, there is no tuition fee for 
the studies.

Salary: Post doc 2700-3200 EUR per month, Research Assistant 1600-2200 
EUR per month depending on the qualifications.
