Scientist/Post-doctoral position available at University of Caen (France).

Start: 2008, September 1st.

The computer science department of the University of Caen is currently
offering a postdoctoral position to conduct research on object recognition
and object detection. The aim of this project is to develop, implement
and evaluate algorithms to detect and recognize small objects (such as
cars, airplanes, vehicles, etc.) in still images. One of the key issues in
this research will be to propose new local representation of images, and
to use machine learning techniques to build object models based on theses
local representations. As the objects to be detected are very small, it
will be tried to incorporate contextual information in the models, making
the detection process more reliable. Publications related to the project
can be obtained at http://lear.inrialpes.fr/people/jurie.

This 18-month post-doc is funded by the French Defense Ministry. It is
part of a joint project with the French company BERTIN and two INRIA
groups (WILLOW and VISTA) aimed at automatically detecting and identifying
2D and 3D targets in static and dynamic infra-red imagery. The work will
be carried out in a team consisting of post-graduate students and senior
researchers.

The candidate must be fluent in English and should have a Ph.D. degree in
one of the following fields: Computer Science, Pattern Recognition, Image
Processing and Analysis or Applied Mathematics. S/He should also have
abilities to work in a team environment and have good communication skills
as well as proficient at using C++ and Linux.

Applicants should send their curriculum vitae and contact information for
two references to frederic.jurie at unicaen.fr, as soon as possible.
