Research Assistant Professor – Department of Psychiatry

The Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratory (NIRAL) in the 
Department of Psychiatry and the Neuroimaging Core within UNC’s 
Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Center (NDRC) is seeking a fixed 
term faculty member at the Research Assistant Professor level. The 
primary duties will include collaborative research in medical image 
analysis focused on small animal imaging within the NIRAL & NDRC, 
specifically focused on structural MRI and Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The 
candidate will be expected to participate in, or interact with, a 
variety of neurodevelopmental research projects in small animal imaging, 
such as studies of mouse and rat models in neurodevelopmental pathology. 
The major initial focus will be in the analysis of images from a study 
of intra-uterine cocaine exposed rats and the establishment of image 
analysis core services in small animal imaging within the NDRC. The 
candidate will be expected to perform independent research with 
competitive paper and grant writing.

A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or 
Electrical Engineering is required.

Demonstrated successful independent research in medical image analysis 
via several first author journal papers of both methodological and 
applied nature and extensive knowledge of C++ programming with prior 
experience with open source medical image analysis projects. Experience 
in graduate student advising is an advantage. Expertise specifically in 
brain image analysis both structural MRI and Diffusion Tensor Imaging is 
needed. Experience with small animal imaging is a plus. The successful 
applicant will be able to conduct solid, independent research, with good 
interpersonal and communication skills.
