Job Description:
Researcher (PhD student or Postdoc) position in 3D Video Synthesis and
Coding:
Depth can be utilized to synthesize novel views from available ones, thus
enabling use cases where only a limited number of input views are available
for coding and transmission. Subsequently, using the input video streams
plus the depth information, any number of intermediate views can be derived
and generated for rendering on 3D displays or for enabling free view point
applications where the user can select to view the 3D scene from an
arbitrary view point. Towards this goal, we will develop efficient
algorithms for video synthesis; these algorithms could become essential
tools in future technologies for coding of 3D video.
Skills:
Experience in video signal processing and compression. Track record on
scientific publishing. Good written and spoken English. Good programming
skills in C/C++ and Matlab.
Tampere University of Technology, Department of Signal Processing (TUT SP)
Responsible leader: Prof. Moncef Gabbouj (www.cs.tut.fi/~moncef)
The Department of Signal Processing (SP) of TUT is one of the world's
prominent research organizations in the field, unifying signal processing
algorithms with bioinformatics, telecommunications, and networked
multimedia. Its expertise spans compression techniques, audio, image and
video analysis, filtering and transform-based techniques. The Department of
Signal Processing is hosting the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in
Signal Processing (2006-2011) and the proposed research falls within the
research Focus Area of the Centre. The department is highly recognized by
its participation in international projects and research actions, such as
SCHEMA (http://www.iti.gr/SCHEMA/), SIMILAR (http://www.similar.cc),
BIOPATTERN (http://www.biopattern.org/), PLUTO (www.ist-pluto.org), COST 292
(http://www.cost292.org/), 3DTV (www.3dtv-research.net), and MOBILE3DTV
(www.mobile3dtv.eu). The Department has had a long term collaboration with
industry, particularly Nokia, in the field of video signal processing, video
streaming and audio signal processing. The advertised position is within a
Nokia-funded project and the work will be jointly supervised by TUT and
Nokia.
Interested candidates should send their CV and list of publications to
Professor Moncef Gabbouj (Moncef.gabbouj at tut.fi). The position will be
filled starting 1.3.2009 for at least one year. Extension for an additional
1-2 years is possible. The position remains open until it is filled. Early
suitable applicants will be given priority.
