**SCOPE*
In the last decade, several recognition and authentication systems based
on biometric measurements have been proposed. Algorithms and sensors
have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric data
sources. The recent introduction of biometric data in electronic
documents has increased the relevance of the secure storage and
processing of personal biometric data. As more security is required,
multimodality has also come to the fore. Moreover, emerging applications
also require to perform human identification in motion and at a distance.
What are the most up-to-date core technologies developed in the field?
What are the most relevant issues in biometric standardization? What are
the real and ultimate limitations of human recognition/authentication
systems working at a distance? How to develop/integrate a biometric
recognition system?
This school follows the successful International Summer Schools on
Biometrics held since 2003, but with a different target. In this 7th
edition, the courses will mainly focus on new and emerging issues in
biometrics:
 - How to exploit new technologies in forensics and in security
application at a distance;
 - Identity management in new and emerging multimodal biometric
technologies;
 - Standardization, evaluation and assessment of biometric applications.

The courses will provide a clear and in-depth picture on the
state-of-the-art in biometric verification/identification technology,
both under the theoretical and scientific point of view as well as in
diverse application domains. The lectures will be given by 18
outstanding experts in the field, from both academia and industry.
Emphasis will be given to evaluation, standardization and to define the
maturity of technology for the deployment of biometrics in a wide range
of applications.

The school is endorsed by the International Association for Pattern
Recognition (IAPR), under the Technical Committee 4 on Biometrics and by
the IEEE Biometrics Council.

*PARTICIPANT APPLICATION*
The school will be open to about 50 highly qualified, motivated and
pre-selected applicants. Phd students, post-docs, researchers or
industrial professionals in the field are encouraged to apply.
The lectures will be given by several outstanding experts in the field,
from both academia and industry.

The expected school fees will be in the order of 1,200 euro for Phd
students and 1,800 euro for others (subject to change). The fees will
include full board accommodation, all courses and handling material.
Some scholarships will be awarded to the best Phd students selected on
the basis of their scientific background and on-going research work. The
scholarship request form is available on the web site.

Phd students and post-docs applicants are encouraged to submit a short
paper (6 pages maximum, original and unpublished work) on their recent
research activity. Selected papers may be published, either in an edited
book, or in a journal special issue.

*SCHOLARSHIPS*
A limited number (around 5) scholarships will be available for selected
Phd students to cover the school fees. Applicants holding a Phd student
status may request a scholarship support clearly stating their request
in the application and also providing a valid proof of their student
status. The scholarships are offered by the COST Action 2101, IEEE,
Sagem and by GIRPR (the Italian branch of IAPR).

Send a filled application form (download from http://biometrics.uniss.it
<http://biometrics.uniss.it/>) together with a short curriculum vitae
to: Massimo Tistarelli - tista at uniss.it <mailto:tista at uniss.it>
Advance pre-registration is strictly required by all applicants by
February 15th 2010.

*LOCATION*
The school will be hosted by Hotel Capo Caccia in Tramariglio
(http://www.hotelcapocaccia.it <http://www.hotelcapocaccia.it/>) near
Alghero, Sardinia, one of the most beautiful resorts in the
Mediterranean sea.

The hotel Capo Caccia is a recently renovated conference center, fully
equipped for scientific events. The structure is divided into three main
blocks, beautifully immersed into the Capo Caccia natural reserve. The
central building, the dÈpendence and the other structures of the village
are joined each other by a covered walk, which pleasantly crosses the
park, reaching the swimming-pool and the beach. The entire structure as
well as the surroundings proved to be a perfect environment for the
school activities.
