Dublin, CA for a Staff Application Development Scientist.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Staff Application Development Scientist is responsible for the
development, implementation and execution of data analysis tools for
medical applications, including image processing algorithms such as
layer segmentation for new and existing ophthalmic platforms. Must be
able to define complex problems and solutions and transfer
requirements to software and engineering developers. Must be able to
deliver high quality, cutting edge solutions. Will be point of contact
with outside clinical and scientific experts for scientific concepts
and investigations, and represent the company and product team to the
outside clinical community. Must demonstrate thorough understanding of
clinical, technical and commercial strategies. Responsible for
carrying out diverse tasks related to development of new diagnostic
ophthalmic applications for new and existing products.  Will play a
key role in determining clinical needs, scientific approach, and
performance and in providing guidance to make appropriate trade-offs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assimilate and apply new methods for the evaluation of clinical data,
and use creative problem solving skills to develop innovative
application solutions
Develop segmentation algorithms optimized for aiding doctors in
medical diagnosis
Conduct tests or investigations pertaining to development of new data
acquisition and analysis methods and investigate possible application
of results
Analyze and verify application performance through data analysis,
simulation and measurement
Develop and document concept investigation plans and results
Work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires
an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
Exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in
selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining
results.
Identify and work with external research organizations to apply
existing and developing concepts to ophthalmic products
Review current developments in the diagnostic ophthalmic industry and
report findings.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Director of Advanced Development.
Interfaces regularly with Engineering, Marketing, Clinical Affairs,
Management, and external research groups.

REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced degree highly desirable, Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical
Engineering, Optics or Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent.
Strong experience in collaborating with clinicians to understand
medical requirements and to develop new approaches to data analysis.
Strong experience with development of algorithms for data analysis,
especially statistical analysis, image processing or and segmentation.
Expertise with implementation of algorithms in C++ code, Matlab,
Mathematica, or similar packages is required.  Experience with C++ is
particularly desirable.
With a PhD, four to seven (4-7) years of medical device experience,
preferably with ophthalmic imaging technology.
Ability to work independently to conceive and manage new projects.
Must have good written/verbal/listening skills and demonstrate
excellent presentation skills.
Able and willing to work within a multidisciplinary team of peers and
outside experts.  Must exhibit both good leadership and team member
qualities.
