LIRA -Skin Care Project- Two open post-doctoral positions at INRIA in 2012
Two post-doctoral positions are available at INRIA in its two centers (Sophia-Antipolis Méditerranée and Bordeaux Sud-Ouest) within the LIRA consortium about skin care, cosmetology, dermatology image and signal processing involving INRIA (France), Fraunhofer Institutes (Germany) and Philips R&D (The Netherlands). The two post-doctoral positions at INRIA are deeply related and the two chosen candidates will communicate and work regularly with each other. The present proposal describes the INRIA Sophia-Antipolis Méditerranée offer in the Ayin research group. The position opened at INRIA Bordeaux Sud-Ouest is presented in a separate call.
Context
The Skin Care (LIRA) research consortium involves three key partners (INRIA, Fraunhofer Institutes, Philips R&D) in a very ambitious project on the quantitative evaluation of skin condition using (and developing) advanced methodologies in the processing, analysis and classification of newly available skin data. The offered positions take place in the framework of the preparation of an EU project : the candidate will start reading key reference papers and will perform preliminary experiments on the data provided by the partners, he/she will evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approaches, and will help in the definition and redaction of the EU proposal. The candidate will travel regularly between involved partners and will work in close collaboration with the corresponding post-doc at INRIA Bordeaux Sud-Ouest.
Description
The LIRA Skin Care project comprises the measurement, analysis, modeling and characterization of the condition of human skin as well as evaluation of means to influence that condition. We will focus on the skin of healthy human beings, although cosmetic conditions like pimples or mild acne could be included. When a person ages, older skin appears dull, wrinkly and uneven in color. Some of the changes in skin over time have to do with chronological ageing, others with extrinsic ageing brought about, for instance, by sun exposure and smoking. Although the effects of ageing are readily observed by visual inspection, it has proven difficult to relate the visual changes in ageing skin to measurable quantities of the various skin layers and vice versa.
The three involved partners are committed to making definite advances from both fundamental and engineering perspectives by using the most advanced signal and image processing and statistical methods on new kinds of available data. For that matter, most advanced acquisitions and experiments will be made available.
An important part of the post-doc work will first consist of understanding the physics of the acquisitions provided by the partners, examine and understand how image and statistical processing tools can be applied to the data, how the different data can be used, perform first experiments to test the most fundamental algorithms on these data etc.
In a second part, the post-doc working at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis Méditerranée will help in writing an EU proposal and will be updating a website dedicated to the skincare LIRA project.
Skills
The candidate must have:
• Solid skills in understanding and use of advanced statistical and applied mathematical tools (statistical analysis of time series and multidimensional data, stochastic models such as Markov random fields, point processes…).
• A good knowledge of image processing.
• A good knowledge of programming languages (C or C++ in particular)
• An excellent English level.
Income amount
Based on INRIA salary for post-doctoral positions, around 2100 euros net/month.
Duration
16 months, can be extended to 24 months after one year in the position.
Starting date
Between April and September 2012
